The True Founders of The Swiss Confederation, A New Look
Most contemporary Swiss believe that the Confederation was founded in 1291 by three
leaders of a rebellion (Walter Furst, Werner Stauffacher, Arnold von Melchthal).
Actually, these traditional leaders were postulated by Friedrich Schiller, an 18th
century German poet. They turn out to be fictitious literary figures.
While Walter Angst loved historic
folklore, fables and sagas as much as the next person, he also loved to find out the
truth, which is just as exciting as the familiar story.
In a labor of love, he discovered the real "founding fathers" of the Swiss confederation (as much as scant sources allow it), researched and drew their heraldic shields. They are explained in his, 168-page book: PROGRESSIVE REBELS, The Founding Fathers of the Swiss Confederation.
This soft-cover book has 41 original, black and white heraldic illustrations, measures 5 by 8 inches, and details the political leaders of each Canton from 1291-1979.
